Teens and Depression: Signs of depression can be hard to spot in teenagers.

Teenage depression affects about 11 percent of adolescents. Parents sometimes miss signs of depression in teens because the symptoms of depression can look a lot like normal teen moodiness. Learning to distinguish everyday mood swings from teenage depression can mean the difference in a teen’s long-term health and wellness.

According to Ken Duckworth, M.D., medical director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, sadness is a core feature of most depression and it’s what most people associate with teenage depression.
